The Challenge
"What if software stopped reporting financial information and started acting like an intelligent financial operating system?"
During market research, I discovered several recurring pain points across different user groups. ↠ Consumers struggled with fragmented financial data spread across multiple institutions. ↠ Freelancers found traditional budgeting ineffective because income fluctuated monthly. ↠ Families lacked a shared financial picture. Investors managed portfolios across disconnected platforms. ↠ ↠ Retirees struggled with increasingly complex withdrawal strategies. Although each audience appeared different, they all shared one underlying challenge. Financial management still requires people to become financial experts. Current products either: ↠ Display information ↠ Automate one isolated task ↠ Answer questions without understanding the user's actual finances None continuously reason across a person's financial life while taking meaningful action.
Competitive Analysis
I evaluated leading products including: ↠ Mint ↠ Copilot Money ↠ Rocket Money ↠ Monarch Money. ↠ YNAB ↠ Revolut ↠ Fidelity ↠ Wealthfront ↠ Robinhood ↠ Cleo AI Rather than comparing feature lists, I analyzed how each product approached financial management. The pattern became clear. Every solution was either: ↠ A Mirror: Displays financial information. ↠ A Rule Engine: Automates predefined workflows. ↠ A Chatbot: Answers questions but cannot truly manage finances. No platform combined: ↠ Live financial context ↠ Persistent memory ↠ Multi-step reasoning ↠ Autonomous execution ↠ Explainable decision making This became Meridian's strategic positioning.
Research & Discovery
Product Strategy
1. Perception: Create a real-time Financial Twin that aggregates bank accounts, investments, loans, subscriptions, receipts, and tax documents into one continuously updated model. 2. Reasoning: Enable AI to understand trade-offs, simulate scenarios, forecast outcomes, and explain every recommendation transparently. 3. Action: Move beyond recommendations by allowing users to define permission levels for autonomous financial actions, such as bill negotiation, portfolio rebalancing, fraud protection, and cash optimization. This progression from seeing, to thinking, to acting became the foundation of the entire product architecture.
User Research
Rather than designing for a single persona, I synthesized research across multiple financial lifestyles. Key personas included: Freelancers with irregular income, Startup founders, Retirees, University students, Families managing shared finances Although their financial situations differed significantly, the Jobs-to-be-Done remained remarkably consistent. Users wanted technology that would: ↠ Think ahead ↠ Reduce anxiety ↠ Explain complex decisions ↠ Handle repetitive financial work ↠ Help them make better long-term decisions
Information Architecture
Given the breadth of financial activities, organizing information clearly became essential. I designed the platform around a central Financial Twin supported by specialized product domains: ↠ Financial Overview AI Agent ↠ Accounts ↠ Transactions ↠ Budgets ↠ Investments ↠ Goals ↠ Reports ↠ Protection ↠ Taxes ↠ Settings Connecting every experience is the Action Queue, a unified workspace where users review AI-generated recommendations regardless of where they originated. This reduced navigation complexity while reinforcing a single mental model for autonomous financial management.
